L’ORIGINE DU MONDE – 1866
In its time, this painting scandalized the public with its audacity.
This work reveals a female sex with frankness and without artifice: a woman’s body, thighs apart on an exposed pubis, and a breast protruding from a sheet.
This work has always been accompanied by stories and legends. It is a painting that we have often talked about without having seen it, but always fantasized about.
“L’ORIGINE DU MONDE” is a painting made in 1866 by Gustave Courbet, a French painter known for his realistic style. It represents an intimate view of the female anatomy, featuring a naked woman lying on a bed, her legs apart. This painting was painted at a time when society was strongly marked by Victorian ideas and bourgeois morality, which made this kind of representation very shocking.
Courbet was known for his realistic style and his desire to represent reality as it was, without make-up or idealization. He wanted to show sexuality in a raw and natural way, without taboos or prohibitions. It is thus part of a tradition of art that aims to question established norms and to provoke the viewer by highlighting subjects considered shocking. He also positions himself in opposition to the Victorian ideals which advocated prudishness and the repression of sexuality.
The painting was met with outrage at its first public display, and was quickly removed from display. It was hidden away for many years, before it was finally purchased by a private collector who kept it until today.
Today, “L’ORIGINE DU MONDE” is considered a masterpiece of realistic art and a symbol of freedom of expression. It is also a testimony to the Victorian era and the repression of sexuality. It continues to spark debate and controversy, but undeniably remains a major masterpiece in the history of art. It is now exhibited at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
It is important to note that the painting was painted at a time when sexuality was not as freely discussed as it is today, and depicting sexuality in such an explicit manner was very uncommon. He therefore had a huge impact by breaking taboos and paving the way for other artists to freely explore the subjects of sexuality and nudity in art.
In short, “L’ORIGINE DU MOND” by Gustave Courbet is a painting that revolutionized the representation of sexuality in art by breaking the taboos of its time. It bears witness to Courbet’s desire to show the reality of sexuality in a raw and natural way, without make-up or idealization. He was also a symbol of freedom of expression by challenging the moral and social conventions of the Victorian era.
Furthermore, this painting is also considered a masterpiece of realist art, due to the way it depicts reality in a raw and authentic way. He was also a precursor to modern art by paving the way for other artists to freely explore the subjects of sexuality and nudity.
It is important to note that, despite the shocked reactions at its time, “L’ORIGINE DU MONDE” is today considered a masterpiece of art history. It is exhibited in the world’s greatest cultural institutions, and continues to inspire artists and intellectuals around the world.
In summary, “L’ORIGINE DU MONDE” by Gustave Courbet is a painting that revolutionized the representation of sexuality in art by breaking the taboos of its time. It is a symbol of freedom of expression and artistic audacity, and remains a major masterpiece in the history of art. It continues to inspire artists, intellectuals and scholars around the world, and remains a subject of debate and reflection.

THE SISTERS OF ESTRÉE – 1594 – Tribute to FONTAINEBLEAU SCHOOL
Could this painting hide an almost perfect crime?
The subject astonishes by its audacity: two young naked women, of which only the busts appear and a strange gesture… One of the young ladies pinches the nipple of her neighbor. What could be the message.
Taken out of its historical context or one of the two sisters, Gabrielle d’Estrées is the mistress of Henry IV, this painting perhaps represents a hidden scene of LGBT love?
The painting reinterprets the famous work of the Sisters of Estrees of the School of Fontainebleau. This original painting, made at the beginning of the 16th century, is considered one of the masterpieces of the school of Fontainebleau, which exerted a considerable influence on Renaissance art in France.
The gesture of pinching the nipple is often used in artistic representations to suggest sexuality and sensuality. It can be used explicitly or implied, and can be considered provocative or erotic depending on the context. In classical art it is often used to represent the gods and goddesses of love and sexuality, such as Venus or Aphrodite. In modern art it is often used to explore themes such as power and female sexuality. It is important to note that this depiction can be seen as objectifying and can be viewed negatively by some people. It is important to take these considerations into account when creating a work of art that uses this gesture.
I also wanted to explore contemporary themes such as diversity and the representation of women in art, using the gesture of strong female characters to represent sisters.
By reinterpreting this historical work, I wanted to show how art can be revisited to adapt to modern times while retaining its original essence. My painting is a tribute to the school of Fontainebleau and to this emblematic work, while bringing a contemporary perspective.
