The ECH paintings, or ME in Alsatian, are a series of unique works created by Semaj at the request of a gallery owner passionate about art. This self-portrait project was an opportunity for Semaj to discover himself, to immerse himself in his own inner world and to share it with the outside world.
The idea of self-portraiture may seem frightening to some, as it involves looking yourself in the face and questioning yourself. For Semaj, however, it was an interesting challenge that drove him to explore his inner self and translate it into his works. He wanted to go beyond the simple representation of his physical appearance and portray his personality, character and state of mind, while avoiding falling into the "selfie" trap that we see so often today. .
ECH paintings with their vibrant colors, organic shapes and textures reflect individuality and depth. Each canvas is like an open window, revealing humanity, fears, hopes and dreams.
The ECH paintings are also distinguished by the texts in the background, which are extracts from the lyrics of songs by Oxmo Puccino, a talented French rapper, a true virtuoso of words. The words chosen are in perfect harmony with the theme of the self-portrait and add a touch of poetry and sensitivity to the works. It's as if Semaj speaks through the words of Oxmo, expressing his innermost and deepest feelings.
Ultimately, ECH charts are more than just a representation of a physical appearance. They are intimate and personal works that invite us to explore our own inner selves. They show us that we are all more than we appear to be, and that there is a richness and depth in each of us that deserves to be explored and celebrated.
ECH paintings invite the viewer to question their own life, explore their deepest thoughts and feelings, and connect with their inner self. It is a truly powerful experience that can change the way we see the world and ourselves.
